Summerhill:
Changing people and a neighborhood
The Summerhill Ministry project is one of the oldest and most unique at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church.
"This is the kind of mission project I dreamed about when I was in seminary," said SPdL Pastor David Sapp. "We are not only changing lives, but we are changing the entire face of an Atlanta neighborhood."
SPdL's ministry to Summerhill dates back to the Holy Spirit's calling of members of Second Baptist Church to help revitalize a neighborhood, just south of their church. Second Baptist later moved northward to merge with Ponce de Leon Baptist at the current Peachtree and Wesley Road location. By the mid 1980s the Summerhill work had become focused on the construction of new affordable housing, and SPdL members were providing professional assistance to locate, appraise, purchase, title and build homes on vacant land.
Samy Naguib, who coordinates the Summerhill Ministry, said SPdL members, working with other churches and groups, have helped in the construction of more than 100 homes. The impact of this extraordinary devotion can be seen along Atlanta Avenue and in the three blocks of Grant Terrace between Little Street and Georgia Avenue. "Where kudzu and squalor once dominated there is now a new community that shows what God's people can accomplish with His help."
In addition to the construction of the new homes, the Summerhill project has:
- provided food and clothing to children and parents during times of need;
- supported the purchase of school uniforms for children
- advanced the cause of the gospel in unity with Martin Street Church of God, Georgia Avenue Church, and the Alexander Memorial AME Church; and
- supported excellence in schools programs.
Naguib said, "Summerhill is a better place not because SPdL went there but because Christ was there in the person of many of His faithful."
