Finalizing Your Funeral Plans

“Where should the service be held?” “Are there favorite hymns that should be sung or special music that you would like to have played?” “Would you prefer to have your body donated to medical science?”  “What special information should be included in your obituary?”  These and other questions are often not dealt with until someone dies. At that point, surviving family members have to scramble and make quick decisions.

There is a better way. The Pastoral Care Ministry of the church has prepared a “Funeral/Memorial Service Instructions” worksheet for members who would like to give input about their final service.

“This worksheet accomplishes two things,” explains Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care Charles Qualls. “First, it helps families with practical details, with making decisions that they might otherwise be uncertain how to handle. Second, it provides a final touch between you and your loved ones. When one of us stands up at a funeral and says, ‘Now I’m going to read a few passages from the Bible that she wanted to have read today,’ we can see the connection in the family members’ faces as they receive the comfort of knowing that this is what their loved one wanted.”
