Chapel Building Renovation Project Update

CITY OF ATLANTA GRANTS BUILDING PERMIT APPROVAL!!

The diligence of the past eight months has paid off and our prayers have been answered: On Friday, August 22, we received word that the City of Atlanta has granted permit approval for the Chapel Building Renovation project! "We have the gold medal in hand," announced Building Committee Chairman Bill Dukes from the Sanctuary platform on Sunday morning as he shared the news with those gathered for the 11:15 worship service.

This very exciting news means that as soon as the work on our front lawn is complete and the Sanctuary Building entrances reopen, we will be able to vacate the Chapel Building completely and begin the demolition stage of the project. Right now, because of the pace of the work on the flagstone and hardscaping portion, our plan is still to move the Church Offices to their temporary locations during the week of September 8-12. The Sunday School Departments that currently meet in the Chapel Building, however, will continue to do so until contacted by the Church Administrator, Tom Jack. Stay tuned for details!

So just how does the front lawn project look right now?

Well, looking down at the front lawn from up in the Second-Ponce de Leon steeple gives a clear view of the progress to date. Irregularly shaped pieces of flagstone have been placed in a seemingly random order to create a smooth flow for our new walkways. The gathering area in front of the Sanctuary will be paved with regularly spaced rectangular flagstones (pictured here in the foreground), as will the new Sanctuary platform, which also will be framed with limestone blocks.

The next concrete pour will connect the walkway to the gathering area and will extend in front of the enclosed arcade between our Sanctuary and Chapel Buildings.

Meanwhile, the members of the Building Committee are continuing to work on refining the budget, and hope to present responsible figures for approval in September.
